Before setting forth my reasons for leaving the organization, let me urge you please not to take any action with regard to Peter Gonzals' early out. To do so would create unnecessary confusion. The advisory board is aware of the problems and has taken steps to see that they are corrected. Pete Gonzals is still National Director of YARA. While he doesn't have much voice in the operation of the organ- ization, I'm still convinced that his motives are good and that he would like to see YARA become a viable organization. I personally have my doubts as to whether it ever will with Sam Howlett, the National Coordinator, holding the reins. Sam is extremely shrewd and he is more adept at motivating people than anyone I've ever seen. He has a tremendous amount of potential for good, but it became increasingly obvious to me and others who observed him closely that the success of YARA was more important to the future of Sam than the future of the country. When I went with the organization fulltime I discovered that quite a number of things were taking place which were incongruous with the stated aims of the organization -- financial irresponsibility, misrepresentations about what the organ- ization was accomplishing and planned to accomplish, laxity on appointments with very important people, and a shocking amount of callousness toward people who had done the most for the organization. All of this remained pretty well camouflaged until my girlfriend (Lillian Cox), the secretary (Peggy Butler) and I decided around the first part of February that we could not in good conscience remain a part of YARA. It was quite a painful departure as we all were very much committed to the concept. However, I felt an obligation to make certain people who had lent their support to YARA on the basis of my appeal know about my decision. In most cases I simply advised them of my disassociation. With Jon Rose and the most active - 2 - members of the advisory board (primarily Del Smith, my former boss), I went into much more detail. Subsequently the advisory board insisted on an accounting. At a meeting a couple of weeks ago members of the advisory board made it clear that they would be keeping much closer tabs on the organization. Bud, I apologize for not having advised you before now about these developments. However, it really didn't seem necessary since your involvement was more with Pete Gonzals' situation, and his status with YARA hasn't actually changed. As far as the organization itself is concerned, there is still some hope on the part of certain members of the advisory board that with major changes it can still be a useful instrument. Thank you for your help several months ago. I'm really sorry I don't have better news about the organization.
