MEMORANDUM FOR
Rose Mary Woods
Subject: Well-known Presidential Relatives
If you think it appropriate, you might want to let the President
know that he is related to the following famous Americans. This
information comes from Dr. Bell and other relatives and citizens
who have written since last January:
1. Daniel Webster. The President shares a mutual 10 greats
grandfather with him - the Reverend Stephen Bachiler who
came to Massachusetts in 1632.
2. John Greenleaf Whittier. His mother, Abigail, was a
sister of the President's 5 greats grandfather, John Hussey.
3. The late Robert Taylor, the actor. He and the President
are about 8th cousins through the Trimmer family.
4. The Rockefeller brothers. They are related to the
President through the Trimmers. Their common
ancestor was Johannes Trimmer, who came to America
in 1738.
5. John Bartram, the famous 18th century botanist. He
married a Mendenhall and is the President's 6th great
uncle. Dr. Bell's latest estimate is that the President
has 2 million identifiable cousins.
Two-thirds of the President's ancestors were Quaker and on the
average they landed in America about 1695. There is no record
of any arriving after 1775.
