Dright HIGH PRIORITY MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. HALDEMAN FROM: DWIGHT L. CHAPIN SUBJECT: Polling Information I think an issue should be made of our trying to obtain polling information from the second wave. Last Saturday a memorandum was sent over from 1701 to your office which contained the information we need for proceeding with some schedule planning and trying to get a good feel as to the situation in various parts of the country and where we should concentrate. That information was sorted through and on Monday was put into different form. On Tuesday we met with Teeter who had some sheets of paper with him but we were not allowed to get hold of these pieces of paper. We ended the meeting, hoping to get within the next day or so a written description of the polling information, or at least figures so we could interpret them ourselves. Before noon yesterday the information was delivered from 1701 to your office and so far it has not shown up here. We are doing some rough campaign plans so as to spark some comment from you and give you some materials to work with should the President want to start talking about the campaign. We can't get our work done because we can't get the information. It's a little disconcerting to feel the massive screening process has to take place prior to my getting the information. I could get hold of the information immediately directly from 1701 if I wanted to ge that route. 1701 is a little ceafused as to what's going on and, needless tesay, I am too. I do share your feeling that he is an outstanding candidate and 1 wish I could be there to meet him personally and wish him well. With kind regards, Sincerely, Dwight L. Chapin Deputy Assistant to the President Senator Hugh Scott Minority Leader United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 HUGH SCOTT PENNSYLVANIA United States Senate OFFICE OF THE MINORITY LEADER WASHINGTON, D.C. 20510 August 25, 1972 Mr. Dwight Chapin 5113 Baltimore Avenue Washington, D. C. 20016 Dear Mr. Chapin: You have been invited to a reception in honor of our Republican candidate for the Senate from New Mexico, Pete Domenici. I want you to know that I consider this a key race worthy of your closest consideration. This is one state where our Party stands to make a net gain in a long-time Democratic stronghold. We cannot approach the prospect of a majority in the Senate without this seat. Happily, we have the man for the job. Pete Domenici is a proven vote-getter and accomplished campaigner with a fine public service record. He looks forward to being part of the President's team and spares no effort in his hard-hitting campaign. You will be pleased when you meet him. He's a well-balanced man of good judgement who can be counted on to get the facts on an issue and act from mature reason rather than half-baked emotion. In short, he's the kind of man you and our Nation need in Washington. New Mexico Republicans are proudly straining their resources for the President and Pete Domenici. You're feeling pretty well strained yourself by now! But this is an opportunity you might not have again. The Democratic Senate will be there with a vengeance in January unless you help make it otherwise. Come meet Pete Domenici. I look forward to seeing you. Now that this time is at hand, I am preparing to head South when Santa comes and hitch a ride to Columbia on his way to the South Pole. Before leaving, I want to let you know what a tremendous pleasure it has been for me to work with you in the interest of our great and very successful President and to thank you for all your splendid cooperation. My plan is to try to defend miscellaneous chicken thieves in South Carolina for a while. so, if you ever get in trouble passing through you'll know where to find the most loquacious shyster below the Mason-Dixon.
