RN - DRAFT NUMBER 4
- 3 -
2. After all, the war had been begun by my predecessor.
(1) I could blame the defeat
for
America
which
would be the result of such action, on him and
come out as the peacemaker.
(2) Some put it quite bluntly: This was the only
way to avoid allowing Johnson's war to become
Nixon's war.
(3)) But I had a greater obligation than to think only
of the years of my Administration and the next
election.
1. I had to think of the effect of my decision on
the next generation and the future of peace and
freedom in America and the world.
2. Let us all understand that the question before
us is not whether some Americans are for
peace and some against it.
3. The great question at issue is not whether
Johnson's war becomes Nixon's war but how
wescan win America's peace.
