Suggested Remarks for Arrival at Louisville Airport
Or Other Appearance Aside From Governors Meeting
It's good to be back in Louisville. This is my second visit to this
city since I became President. My first came just 14 months ago when
I became the first President in history to attend the Kentucky Derby.
In fact, someone told me afterward that I was the first President since
1879 to go to a racetrack anywhere while he was President.
The great Kentucky writer, Irvin S. Cobb, once said that "a
Kentucky girl does not consider that she has been properly launched
into society until she has seen a Derby
11 Similarly, I figured that
I would not be properly launched into the Presidency till I had seen a
Derby. Besides that, I promised the voters of this State that if I was
elected President, I would come back for the 95th Run for the Roses.
And I kept that campaign promise.
When I was at the Derby, I didn't do any betting. But I did pick the
winner, Majestic Prince. The reason I picked him was that I learned
that Majestic Prince had done most of his racing in California and I de-
cided that if horse racing was anything like politics, then California
probably provided the most rugged preparation for a big national test.
