Secretary and Mrs. Hardin and Mr. and Mrs. Butz
will be brought into your office for a brief courtesy
call by John Ehrlichman. The White House photographer
will be present to take photographs. No substantive
material will be discussed during this session.
4:00 p.m.
You, Secretary and Mrs. Hardin and Mr. and Mrs. Butz
proceed out to the Press Room for the announcement
of Secretary Hardin's resignation and the appointment
of Mr. Butz as Secretary Hardin's successor (suggested
remarks attached).
Note: In accordance with your instructions to Messrs.
Ehrlichman and Whitaker this morning, a one-
sentence summary relating to the streamlining
of the Department of Agriculture was prepared
and is appended to the remarks.

You depart the Press Room and return to your office.
