Drug Meeting with Professional and Collegiate Athletes
February 3, 1972
2:00 p.m. (10 minutes) - East Room
I. PURPOSE
To express appreciation to athletes appearing in mass media anti-drug
commercials and to inform them and their wives about your Administration's
drug control programs (Agenda at Tab A).
II. BACKGROUND, PARTICIPANTS, AND PRESS PLAN
A. Background: NIMH originated the idea of having athletes do anti-drug
commercials to try to reach America's youth. To date some 85 such
commercials have been prepared.
B. Participants: Professional and collegiate football, baseball, and basketball
players, and athletic league executives and representatives of advertising
firms contributing to various mass media drug campaigns. Participants,
with athletic descriptions, are attached at Tab B.
C. Press Plan: Full press coverage of your remarks in East Room, and
press pool photo coverage of your reception line in Blue Room. Individual
photos taken by White House photographers at reception.
III. ACTION SEQUENCE
At 2 p.m. you enter East Room via center doors and deliver remarks expressing
your appreciation for the athletes' efforts toward curbing drug abuse and briefly
describe your Administration's balanced, comprehensive attack on the problem
of drug abuse (Tab C). Athletes then receive detailed briefings from Adminis-
tration spokesmen. At 5 p.m. you and Mrs. Nixon greet athletes at receiving
line in the Blue Room.
