The group initially balked because they didn't think the return was to be anything but a trick by North Sat. the nets featured the arrivals at Alameda (Travis fogged in) w/focus on 1st 2 men to be carried off on stretchers and their salutes to the flag Another 100 POWs of 400 still held to return in about a week Weekend papers are full of stories on return to families. Focus on great happiness, continuing praise for RN and nation and the changes since they were captured. Both Sat/Sun. p. 1 News photo of POW -- 1 of Alvarez captioned: "God Bless America for Not Forgetting" and the other of the crippled Madden in stretcher saluting w/caption: "So Proudly He Hails. " Some Sat. photos of RN at Mayport and inside stories but not the dominant coverage the stop received on Fri. nets. - Much weekend attention, especially Times and Post tho story led also in Sun and Star, to/the JMC' 8 call for all sides to stop fighting in the "violation-riddled," "bullet-punctured" ceasefire.
