POLITICAL MEDIA ANALYSIS October 2, 1972 THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN The latter part of the weekend found most political news deep within the back pages. The McGovern hard news item this morning is Eleanor's promise that George will unveil his peace plan Tuesday, which will likely focus political debate this mid-week. MCGOVERN - -- The polls, with the exception of Gallup, who came down with a "compromise" 28-point spread, were almost uniformly bad for McGovern late last week. RN leading by an enormous margin in Illinois, RN picked up 10 in Iowa, etc. Further, inside stories this weekend, and even front-page in Washington Post today, are in-depth analysis of McGovern's problems and troubles. Little to provide him with momentum. Sarge did get a first-rate report from CBS over the weekend, however, and his reviews in the Eastern liberal press are better. PRESIDENT -- Light political news weekend. Signing got a good ride, though two nets noted political fall-out with Utley saying this is the kind of thing that "drives the McGovern people up the wall. 11 One cloud on the horizon no biggen than a man's hand. Note very negative Broder column of Sunday urging press not to cover RN trips, unless journalists can "get" at the President. Likely to be talking point among press this morning, may influence coverage somewhat. Veep got good footage and coverage this weekend, continuing focus on new Agnew, somewhat blander than the old. Mostly favorable, but unexciting is the general conclusion. Also, we are starting to get more and more columns about the "antipathy" among the electorate, they are "turned off", etc. One cannot recall any campaign where the liberal press has not at some point come to this conclusion, that the voters are not "excited" by either candidate. Finally, following last night's McGoo move, we should be seeing more advertising footage of McGovern in a last-ditch effort to erase the negative profile he now has with the electorate. Note: News Summary this morning has toward rear a thirteen-page analysis and break-down of the handling of President's New York-California trip and the week in general. (A number of reports on the three-day trip were negative.) #####
