CBS AM film of HAK w/Meir as she called it a great day and
expressed hope this will be beginning of a process towards peace.
She gave HAK her thanks and appreciation. HAK hoped this would
be an important day for all the world and noted its particular
poignancy for Israel which has never known a period of acceptance
and peace. They will try to make sure this is not an interlude but
the day that peace came, said HAK
Star notes HAK's "somber"
toast to the accord's future, that it's impossible to determine
whether the agreement's "an episode" or a "fork in the road" which
might lead to real peace.
Praising HAK as the "con summate negotiator, 11 Israel's
Herzog on CBS AM said immediate military impact of agreement
was defusion of the situation. While neither side got what it wanted
totally, each gained. From both military and political viewpoint,
Egypt can show considerable gain; Israel is able now to demobilize
altho it still maintains a good defense position. All told, agreement
is "best 1 could get under the circumstances, 11 said Herzog. M-E
traded certain war for possibility of future war. Further, he noted,
M-E mood now is that negotiation is possible
Israel's Rabin
on Today said agreement gives a chance for a movement toward
peace and some hope that hostilities will be stopped. Further, it
reduces tension
But opposition leader Begin suggested Egypt
would break agreement as it had in past. Egyptians don't hide in-
tent to continue state of war and to get Israel to w/draw to '67 lines.
They may call it a step to peace, but Israel knows Egypt will try
to get Israel to point where it'll be able to destroy the state, said
Begin
Asked about possibility Egypt might break agreement,
Rabin said if one is interested in peace and a political settlement,
he should try and not be discouraged about what has happened in
the past. Terms, eg, UN buffer, also make it much more difficult
for Egypt to surprise Israel -- and thus it'd be much clearer if
Egypt breaks the pact -- and Israel's strength also helps in making
them keep it. Further, he suggested, role US played widens its
responsibility if agreement is broken.
