Major stories of the day:
THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
RN's 1st 3 Cabinet appointments led and dominated all 3 nets.
CBS film of Ziegler making announcement, w/film of
Richardson on all nets and Ash and Weinberger on ABC/NBC.
Chancellor placed emphasis on reshuffling, w/Valeriani noting
there were no new faces. NBC's Nessen w/in-depth background
info on all 3 appointees, leading into film clips. CBS w/over 9
minutes on the story (over 4 on ABC/NBC) included straight to
favorable profiles of Laird/Richardson and jobs they've done in
the govt's monster agencies.
Note by ABC/CBS of Wed. RN-Duc (SVN's-HAK) meeting w/Kalb
saying US hopes for some quiet agreement on at least partial
NVA pullout.
All nets noted Laird's announcement that no one will be drafted
in Jan. and only 10, 000 between Jan. - -June.
Return of Kitty
Hawk to warm San Diego reception on 2 nets w/focus on reluctance
of sailors to discuss race problems.
NBC/CBS noted Ruckelshaus announced grant of $2B in FY '73 and
$3B in FY '74 for sewage treatment - - less than half of what
Congress authorized.
NBC film of Natl. League of Cities
meeting where urban officials have a lot on their mind -- crime,
deterioration and garbage, said Chancellor, but the biggest problem
is money. Reporter noted there is "restrained pessimism" at
meeting because altho officials don't know what RN will do in 2nd
term, they think it's going to be hard to get money.
Newsman Farr and Harvard Prof. Popkin, both jailed for refusing
to divulge confidential sources, received wide coverage on all nets.
Farr on ABC/NBC film w/last chance to say which lawyer gave
him info during Manson trial. He refused, none of the lawyers
would admit it, and Farr was sent to jail.
Popkin turned up
on CBS w/scathing denunciation of grand jury process.
