NEWS SUMMARY
April 13, 1973
(Thurs. nets, wires. Other comment in separate compilation.)
The major stories of the day:
-- Militancy of mourners in Beirut reflected in film reports which
led all nets as up to 100, 000 turned out for rites of the guerrilla
leaders killed by Israelis. ABC emphasized the strong show of
solidarity for the Palestinian movement
NBC/CBS began shows
by noting US concern over Arab broadcasts of Palestinian charges
of US complicity in Israeli attack and over their call on Arabs to
take vengeance on Americans. All nets noted Rogers called in 13
Arab diplomats to ask them to help stop the broadcasts. NBC/CBS
both had Scali on film from UN as he sharply (UPI says "indignantly")
hit the "monstrous accusation, 11 "outrageous lie" and "slander" that
US helped Israeli raiders in any fashion whatsoever. ABC noted
possibility of US veto of any UN move which doesn't equate Munich
etc. w/Israeli raid. Kalb told of US concern (Bray on film) that
the "Big Lie" could lead to wave of anti-US terror in Mideast as
well as resumed Arab-Israeli hostilities
NBC w/film of new
Israeli gun, purchase of which US is reportedly interested.
Lack of details amidst WH efforts to play down any crisis atmos-
phere re: Cambodia was subject of #2 reports on ABC/CBS w/
RN-NSC and RN-Haig meetings noticed. Rather said WH asks
"what crisis? 11 when questioned about what CBS called "grim"
and "generally deteriorating" situation in Cambodia
ABC/CBS
noted VC charge ARVN plans to invade Cambodia w/US support.
Rather said that's not under active consideration. ABC noted
no immediate action is contemplated and NBC noted WH anticipates
no major change in WH policy
All nets noted DOD said there
are no MIAs as far as is known and that the only hard execution
info relates to 3 whose deaths were previously announced.
-- Mills on NBC (#2 story) as he said he expects RN to announce a
freeze soon. NBC/CBS noted Hill Dems have a compromise roll-
back-freeze ready to pass as they backed off Wed's plan to extend
RN's controls power 60 days
Reasoner and Brinkley both
sharply hit the Dems led by Muskie/EMK for their tax reform
speeches while Sevareid issued strong call for reform.
