The major stories of the day:
Watergate again dominated nets (10-13 minutes), w/"still more
dramatic developments" (ABC) re: CIA role leading all nets.
Led Chancellor, "CIA accused HRH-JDE of trying to involve CIA
in Watergate. 11 Mudd led, noting Symington charged almost im-
mediately after Watergate there was campaign to get CIA to take
the blame
According to Walters' testimony, read by Symington
on NBC/CBS, on 3 occasions HRH/JDE/Dean tried to (1) get CIA to
block FBI investigation of Mexico money on grounds it'd "com-
promise CIA activities there; (2) get CIA to "go bail" or pay
salary for Watergate conspirators; (3) (noted by ABC) get CIA
to "retrieve evidence" from FBI re: Hunt break-in
Said
Chancellor several important things are revealed in Walters'
testimony: (1) Helms was accused of "untruth" because tho
present at initial meeting to ask CIA to block FBI, he said he
didn't know anything about Watergate; (2) why Gray called RN to
warn him aides were misbehaving; (3) sworn testimony reveals
"2 men closest to Pres. tried to use CIA in coverup of Watergate
to prevent full FBI investigation. 11 Concluded John, "that's the
most important part. 11
NBC/CBS said reportedly Walters at
1 point threatened to go to RN.
All nets #2 story was unanimous Ervin panel vote to grant Dean
partial immunity. On ABC/NBC film Dean -- "nervous man in
middle of Watergate, 11 said Schorr was saying nothing except
he's "very busy¹¹ and "doing what I think is right. 11 ABC, noting
Star interview, said there were "tantalizing hints" of what he
might tell grand jury, but he's saying "almost nothing" in public.
Schorr reported Dean in Common Cause deposition told of WH
decision to delay RN's signing of new campaign law to latest day
possible to allow more time for unreported contributions
NBC/
CBS noted WH statement on Dean's report that "seemed to be backing
away from RN assertion" Dean made report to him.
All nets reported, over silent film RN w/Hill leaders, RN's plan
for bipartisan commission to study election reforms re: spending,
length of campaign, disclosure and his bid they study 6-year Pres.
term and 4-year House term
