THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY October 9, 1973 (Mon. nets, wires. Mags Separate) LTh The major stories of the day: What Cronkite called the Mideast's Yom Kippur War led and dominated all nets w/barely five minutes devoted to other developments. Emphasis on diametrically opposed evaluations as seen from Egypt/Syria and Israel. While Israel claims counter- offensive has begun w/ever-increasing momentum and that Syrians have been pretty well driven out of Golan Heights and most of the Egyptians back across Canal, the Syrians say they still occupy much of the Heights and Cairo, claiming hold on all of the 100 mile East bank of Suez, says its large number of tanks are moving across the desert and that they ve recaptured Quantara in Sinai for 1st time since '67 NBC said Egyptians do appear "well dug in" along Suez. Israeli Gen. Elazar has hinted that his forces won't stop at C-F "lines" and that they 11 push on 'til they break the bones of Arabs and destroy their forces completely. Israel seen embarked on course of "revenge. 11 (Film of the "almost triumphant" Gen. on all nets as there was also film from Syria of Phantoms going down w/US origin emphasized and from Tel Aviv of cocky Israelis confidently moving out. Radio reports from Cairo where "martial and exuberant" music is being heard a good indication of how they view situation, said CBS. "Unending successes was how NBC described Cairo claims.) Port Said has become first civilian center hit w/Israeli jets moving in late Monday. Nets all noted casualty reports are non-existent, but Meir is reportedly "very upset" over losses. Nets noted indications are of heavy losses on both sides. W/each side claiming scores of planes, etc., DOD assessment was given by NBC: Main thrust of Israeli counterattack expected Tuesday and expected to be successful. According to DOD, Israel has lost 40 planes and 100 tanks; Arabs have lost over 100 jets/choppers and several hundred tanks. Israelis paying "heavy price" in Golan Hgts; Egypt w/400 tanks on E. Bank of Suez protected by SAM cover and not moving beyond that protection. Consensus is that Arabs attacked 1st, did so to improve bargaining
