NEWS SUMMARY
October 9, 1973
(Mon. nets, wires. Mags Separate)
LTh
The major stories of the day:
What Cronkite called the Mideast's Yom Kippur War led and
dominated all nets w/barely five minutes devoted to other
developments. Emphasis on diametrically opposed evaluations
as seen from Egypt/Syria and Israel. While Israel claims counter-
offensive has begun w/ever-increasing momentum and that Syrians
have been pretty well driven out of Golan Heights and most of the
Egyptians back across Canal, the Syrians say they still occupy
much of the Heights and Cairo, claiming hold on all of the 100 mile
East bank of Suez, says its large number of tanks are moving across
the desert and that they ve recaptured Quantara in Sinai for 1st time
since '67
NBC said Egyptians do appear "well dug in" along Suez.
Israeli Gen. Elazar has hinted that his forces won't stop at C-F
"lines" and that they 11 push on 'til they break the bones of Arabs and
destroy their forces completely. Israel seen embarked on course
of "revenge. 11 (Film of the "almost triumphant" Gen. on all nets
as there was also film from Syria of Phantoms going down w/US
origin emphasized and from Tel Aviv of cocky Israelis confidently
moving out. Radio reports from Cairo where "martial and exuberant"
music is being heard a good indication of how they view situation,
said CBS. "Unending successes was how NBC described Cairo claims.)
Port Said has become first civilian center hit w/Israeli jets moving
in late Monday.
Nets all noted casualty reports are non-existent,
but Meir is reportedly "very upset" over losses. Nets noted indications
are of heavy losses on both sides.
W/each side claiming scores of
planes, etc., DOD assessment was given by NBC: Main thrust of Israeli
counterattack expected Tuesday and expected to be successful.
According to DOD, Israel has lost 40 planes and 100 tanks; Arabs have
lost over 100 jets/choppers and several hundred tanks. Israelis paying
"heavy price" in Golan Hgts; Egypt w/400 tanks on E. Bank of Suez
protected by SAM cover and not moving beyond that protection.
Consensus is that Arabs attacked 1st, did so to improve bargaining
