THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY November 7, 1973 (Tues. nets, wires, comment) The major stories of the day: What CBS called the "previously unknown central role" of Rose Mary Woods came out at trial tape hearing as it was revealed by Bull and Gen. Bennett that she had participated in attempts to prepare transcripts or summaries of tapes at RN's direction. Effort occurred over several weekends at WH, CD, and KB. Sirica summoned her to testify and WH says she will. She worked on 8 tapes and Mon. at RN's direction received 6 more. Story led all nets w/emphasis on the secrecy of the operation as Bull explained the 24-hour security surrounding tapes as well as his own reluctance to let CD delivery man see what was going on during transcription. Reports also emphasized speculation RN lawyers might be planning some new dramatic move re: tapes. NBC's Stern closed report noting that there's still no evidence RN destroyed any tapes but clearly he spent much time reviewing tapes, perhaps considering whether public disclosure of some or all might not be useful. Richardson said situation in US has deeply eroded confidence in govt and RN and public confidence must be restored. RN can only do it making clear his commitment to the independence of the special prosecutor and by making available any and all docu- ments, records, tapes requested. Film of former AG in #2 story on all nets as he "added to the growing GOP clamor for unqualified WH cooperation" (NBC). ABC/CBS noted he favors Pres-appointed, not Hill-appointed special prosecutor w/ABC/NBC noting he told EMK best way to secure pledge of independence for special prosecutor would be to hold up Saxbe confirmation. CBS had report on SF-based Committee to Support the President. Cronkite noted amid calls for resignation, some supporters were rallying behind RN. NBC noted Clare Booth Luce's break w/Time over its edit and Post edit warning of a "public backlash" against resignation or impeachment if the question of guilt or innocence isn't properly determined.
