Shell prexy Bridges on CBS AM urged look at profit figures
over a longer period than 1 year. He noted '72 was bad for the
industry and when '73 is compared to a good year like '68, profits
are only 7% or so higher. He disagreed that profits will triple in
'74 because sales volume is down and embargo is having effect.
He predicted gas prices would rise but only by max of 10¢ over
1-2 years. He asserted profits tax on corps would lock them
into a depressed period. He thought it'd be more relevant to
apply tax to crude. Asked why the industry is under criticism,
Bridges said perhaps they' ve not tried hard enough to tell their
story. And also there has always been an intense dislike of the
industry.

Noting he's discussed it w/Simon/Shultz, Meany on Today
said labor wants to see priority given in e-crisis to where fuel
affects jobs -- construction, petro-chemicals, etc. He also
asserted gas supplies shouldn't be cut for those who need it to
commute to jobs. But he's optimistic rationing can be avoided and
voluntary methods will continue to work. 1 trouble is getting the
facts on shortage, altho he acknowledged Govt is trying to get them.

notes ther's "suddenly, some optimism on energy. Mild weather,
conservation put stocks in surprisingly good shape. End to
embargo seems likelier now. 11
CBS AM film of Tucson truckstop that has run out of fuel
and won't get a new supply til Feb. Several drivers on film
were bitter or expressed concern about losing their businesses. One
