VanderVeen (D-Mich) accused RN of making a "mockery" of the
Presidency. He told student group he's "more convinced than ever¹¹
that RN owes it to US to resign. "He's trampled on our Constn. and
make a mockery of an office I hold dear, 11 he said. One student held
up sign advising the MC to "get off RN's back. 11 The Cong. said "I'll
not get off his back. He's been on back of American people long enough. "
WH declined to say if RN's ended or plans to end his legal and
personal business relationship w/Kalmbach's firm.
Schorr noted WH has long resisted RMW testimony in Common
Cause suit. Focus was on Rebozo statement that he told only her of
Hughes money in case something happened to him. She says she never
told RN and doesn't remember Hughes name in connection w/money
tho she did recall Danner's. Schorr noted previous testimony that
said a Hughes precondition for the $100, 000 was RN's awareness of
it.
Brinkley closed NBC w/recap on Kalmbach's testimony about
clearing Eur. post for Symington w/WH in exchange for $100, 000
contribution. David discussed in humorous vein the reasons why
diplomats would prefer Europe over Trinidad's rain and steel bands
etc, but he noted Symington didn't get post, is out $100, 000, Kalmbach
may be on way to jail and only way for Symington to get to Europe
now is as a tourist. "A small saga from '72,'' Brinkley called this.
A more serious Sevareid looked at the new emphasis on the old virtue
of honesty as result of W'gate. W/candidates turning down big money,
disclosing personal finances, etc, the bottom line of the social
contract has again become "simple integrity." Britain doesn't have
such campaign finance problems, said Eric, but right now, they're
facing problem of national solvency. As to why RN people ever
went to such lengths in 172 to raise funds, Sevareid noted 1 confidante
recalls RN almost got dropped from ticket in '52 and '56, he barely
lost in '60, did lose in 162 and barely won in '68. So nothing was left
to chance in 172. As a result, Sevareid concluded, RN won the day,
but lost the months and years to follow.
13 qualified as potential jurors in Mitchell and Stans trial. Judge
said, "We might very well have pool selected by mid-afternoon'" Wed.
And jurors could be sworn in by thurs.
