The major stories of the day:
"HAK scored another diplomatic triumph, 11 said CBS in #2 story.
Lead on both ABC/NBC was HAK turning over Syrian list of
65 Israeli POWs to a "joyous", "very pleased" Meir. Film on
all shows of HAK during 7-hours of meeting w/Assad and later
in Israel where Meir said disengagement talks can now go
forward
ABC followed w/film from Golan pointing to difficult
time ahead before agreement can be reached given strategic
import of region to Israel. But ABC said Israel's ready to go
back to the pre-Oct. 173 lines
Hottelet of CBS said progress
so far brought by HAK isn't solution, but the "beginning of the
beginning.

CBS film of overjoyed Israeli mother learning
son is alive
NBC film of US Jewish fundraisers recounting
their terrifying 12-hour experience when blindfolded and under
armed Egyptian guard after the tour bus went too far. But they
say they were dealt w/fairly.
RN and Hill have oft-disagreed, said HKS and a "very big collision"
appears ahead now that House -- on 3rd try -- has passed energy
bill and RN plans to veto it because of rollback provision. 258-151
vote was #2 or 3 story on all nets. NBC's Mackin noted view that
bill was passed because Hill has done almost nothing on e-crisis
and was under pressure to do something. ABC found MCs
overriding their own rules to vote on measure because they're
faced w/spectre of consumer revolt at station lines. John
Anderson on ABC film viewing vote as Pyrrhic victory and
one which won't help boost supplies because it reduces incentive
of oilmen
10-15, 000 mines are now idled in W. Va. /Va,
reported all nets w/film. Industry says it's wildcat strike, but
miners say none will work til all are assured of adequate
gasoline. Meanwhile, 30 miners which produce 140, 000 tons
of coal daily for steel mills lie idle

Sawhill on NBC said even if embargo
continues, he feels rationing can be avoided. But Exxon's
Jamieson and Shell's Bridges followed and predicted next 2-3
months would find a worsened situation -- and that's if embargo
were lifted now.
