NEWS SUMMARY
July 9, 1974
(Mon. nets, wires. Digest separate)
The major stories of the day:
UPI leads: "Jaworski told Supreme Court that if RN insists on
defying court orders to yield W'gate info, US' constitutional govt
'is in serious jeopardy. 111 JSC countered by charging that
Jaworski by design is trying to intrude into the Court and into
the Legislature's impchmnt process -- and that wasn't proper.
Story led all nets w/7-10 mins. total coverage. Only Graham
of CBS ventured a tentative prediction: that RN may win his
point that G-J couldn't name him while losing on question of his
right to w/hold evidence. Stern implied as much when he said
there's "no guarantee" Court decision will end the battle: it may
just set the stage for the next legal battle -- over compliance.
All nets noted WH wouldn't comment on whether RN would obey
Court decision w/NBC's Kiker noting that contrasts w/earlier
WH statements re: obeying "definitive" ruling and "leaves the
question of RN's possible response in great doubt. 11
All nets noted RN met w/VP, Weinberger (silent film on all nets)
and other aides re: domestic affairs. All nets noted RN's phone
call to JSC to approve final argument but as Jarriel noted, if the
future of the RN WH was contingent upon Supreme Court decision
there was no evidence of it in looking at what Kiker called RN's
"normal workday schedule. 11
All nets w/negative reports as JDE took the stand noting his
reliance on memory lapses during cross by prosecution and an
"exasperated" (ABC) Gesell even interrupted JDE testimony on
direct to tell JDE attys to stop tilting w/windmills and ask about
JDE's knowledge of the breakin. He denied authorizing it or even
seeing a blueprint of it
All nets noted Gesell ordered HAK to
appear as defense witness.
All nets noted (ABC/CBS w/film) Colson's turning himself in to
begin sentence. NBC/CBS noted CC said he'll offer new info to
Judiciary when he testifies Fri. but he declined to characterize
it as helpful or harmful to RN. New info will deal in part w/his
relationship w/RN "which was and is very close, 11 ABC noted.
ABC's Gill called him composed and jesting as he compared
himself to W.C. Fields' character who was tarred and feathered
and run out of town: "If it wasn't for the honor I'd just as soon
avoid it. 11 On CBS he said only reading material he was taking in
was 2 Bibles.
