THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN. dog WEEKEND NEWS REVIEW May 13, 1974 The major stories: -- RN's Stillwater appearance led ABC Sat. w/reporter Bell saying that for a Pres besieged by calls for resignation from many past supporters as well as enemies, RN's "campaign-style welcome" (on film) at Vance AFB "had to be a welcome tonic. Film of RN on ABC and net feed to local CBS saying "I can only say on this non-political occasion this -- that having presented all evidence to Hill that I trust House will act promptly so that we can reach a decision so that the Pres. (and) Hill can get on w/people's business as we should. 11 Both clips had heavy applause for those remarks w/a few catcalls discernible. Pierpoint on local CBS noted that despite the occasional heckling it was generally a friendly crowd providing "a happy ending to a hard week for Pres. " -- NBC/CBS Sat. led (#2 ABC) w/Julie-David news conference, thru-out which, NBC said, they suggested RN ought not be criticized publicly for statements in private conver sations. While Cochran on NBC said Julie "w/great emotion" said RN didn't want her to face reporters, Pierpoint on CBS noted it's been 2 months since RN held news conference and press would prefer to question him: instead Julie and David "had to answer the awkward questions "On NBC/CBS Julie said if media has an obsession (or) hangup about resignation, then I feel its my obligation as a daughter to come out here and say, 'no he's not going to resign. 111 On all nets, Julie said RN Fri. said he'd go down to the wire on this -- even if only one Senator supports him. On ABC she added that RN believes in the Presidency and believes this is the best way to handle situation. ABC's Sherwood said Julie showed once again she's "1 of RN's most effective public defenders" but an unanswered question still "hangs heavy'' in DC: can this latest effort by his daughter help stem the rising tide of anti-RN feeling?
