Dr. Wade Wright,
Assistant Medical Director
In Charge of Industrial Hygiene,
Metropoliten Life Insurance Co.,
New York City.
My dear Dr. Wright:
Your letter of June 29th addressed to
Mr. Viedt at our plant in Orange, has been referred to me.
I do not believe we have available at
the present time any information along the lines that would
be helpful to you. of the large mumber of Doctors handling
Radium and with whom we are acquainted, I cannot recall any
who have been inadversely affected through the use of this
Element.
You are possibly familiar with a paper
published by Dr. George Stuart Willis in the American Medical
Association Journal about two years ago. In this he reported
a serious condition that developed in either one or both of
his hands and as I recall finally resulted in the amputation
of a thumb. Dr. Willis was a Radium therapist handling a large
amount of work but I believe his final diagnosis of his own case
was a result from his earlier work with X-Ray. Quite a bit has
been published regarding Roentgen Ulcers but no report of a simi-
lar condition caused by Radium has appeared so far as I low.
Some time ago the press was full of another
martyr to science in France. I took occasion at the time to
write to Dr. Regaud of the Radium Institute to inquire whether
the trouble was caused by Radium, as reported, and he replied that
it was a Roentgen condition.
It would be most interesting to establish what
the hazard is, if any, and during the course of the next few months
I will endeavor to locate some data for you.
Yours truly,
President.
ARoeder-LL.
