Dr. L. F. Craver,
Memorial Hospital,
2 West 106th St.,
New York City.
Dear Dr. Craver:
I am herewith sending you three copies of a preliminary
draft of an article, which we propose to submit for publication as soon as
completed, on experiments conducted for detecting radium and mesothorium in
living persons.
This is in accordance with the conversation which Dr. Flinn,
Dr. Schlundt and the writer had with you on September lst. We are sending
you three copies of this report believing that you may be interested in hand-
ing a copy to each of the members of the Committee.
As you understand this information is confidential, although we
expect to publish same as soon as a few additional experiments have been completed
to round out the paper. We believe that these experiments constitute a real
genuine contribution to this phase of our problem, and are based upon a very
extensive and thorough survey of the field.
Referring to your statement that you would suggest that Dr.
Fialla proceed at once with the assembly of the equipment necessary to conduct
the test for the presence of radio-activity in the five girls under examination,
allow me to advise that we should be glad to place at Dr. Fialla's disposal
the equipment which we have, and which for the most part was used in our report.
As you appreciate, considerable time would be saved in the event that Dr.Fialla
would elect to utilize this equipment rather than ordering new equipment.
I recall that Dr. Flinn has in his possession the X-ray plates
of Mrs. Dumschott, a case in Connecticut which is suffering from so-called
"radium poisoning". Dunschott contains in the neighborhood of 100 micro-
grams of radium element, and I an wondering if you, and perhaps the other members
of your Committee, would be interested in seeing these plates. I am not certain
but believe that Dr. Flinn also has plates of the Dunn case. Miss Dunn passed
away about a year ago.
In case you are interested I am quite certain that
Dr. Flinn would be glad to submit these plates for your examination.
I am also enclosing a newspaper clipping from the "Newark News"
of September 22nd, which may be of casual interest to you. Inasmuch as this
is the only copy of this particular clipping which we possess we would appreciate
your returning it to us.
I hope that Mr. Lee and I will have an opportunity to discuss the
entire situation with you further some day the early part of next week.
With kind regards, I am
Very truly yours,
HHBarker: :RH enclosures
Vice President.
