February 28, 1935. Mr. J. Roach, State Dept. of Labor, 571 Jersey Avenue, Jersey City, N.J. Dear Mr. Roach: In accordance with discussion we have had with you pertinent to our re-oceupying our property at High & Alden Streets, Orange, N.J., we wish to herewith submit for your consideration certain date sug- gested by you. 1 - Photostatic copy of letter from Dr. Harrison S. Martland, Essex County Medical Examiner, relative to the hazards existing in the dial painting industry as conducted under present conditions and under such conditions as we propose, 2 - Photostatic copy of letter from Mr. C.M. Newman, Chairman, Industrial Committee of the City of Orange, N.J., suggesting that the City of Orange would welcome our occupancy of property at High & Alden Streets. 5 - Specifications of the safeguards we propose taking to safe- guard the health of our employees. The United States Redium Corporation has a subsidiary, namely the Weksler Thermometer Corporation, whom they would like to move to Orange with their operations. The Radium Corporation has a payroll of 15-25, of whom about half are engaged in the handling of luminous material, including the application of luminous material to dials, etc. Tie do not anticipate at the moment that this number would be substantially increased over the next two or three years. The Weksler Thermometer Corporation has a payroll of approximately 25 at this time, and with the increased facilities of occupancy of 3. plant, it is hoped this chable would be increased to 100 within two or three years. We respectfully submit this information for your consideration and suggest that your Department concur with us in our contention that the application of luminous material to dials, etc., involves no more risk than is attendant with the average industrial occupation; and that therefore you are willing to give the Department's approval of our in- dustry. This is highly desirable from our viewpoint, as it is through 22 I I Mr. J. Roach Feb. 28, 1935. your Department's approval that we would hope to have the N.J. Rating Bureau assign our compensation risk to some reliable carrier. Please be assured that if any further infor- mation is desired, we shall be glad to supply same, or if you have any suggestions to make, we will endeavor to honor them. Verytruly yours, HHBarker:DK Vice-President Enc.
