I was glad to receive your letter of July 28th and to note that you have returned to the states. Hope your trip abroad was both pleasant and profitable. Our good friend, Barker, passed away on May 7th. He was practically unconscious from the time you called me in New York until his death. of course, this was largely due on account of the excessive drugs used to keep him in comparative comfort. His passing was without an undue amount of pain. The experience of Dr. Hess with the Hitler regime is certainly most unfortunate. I remember Dr. Hoss very well. As a matter of fact, ho taught me to make alpha ray detorminations on carnotite ore previous to my taking charge of our mines in Colorado. I see no place in our organization where we could pos- sibly use Dr. Hess, since our activities have been so greatly cur- tailed. Our only need for a technician is a man familiar with making up radium preparations and the compounding of luminous material, and I am glad to say that our new acquisition, Mr. Wall- hausen, is working out in a very satisfactory manner. Should Dr. Hoss come to the states, we shall be glad to give whatever assistance we can in aiding him to make a satis- factory connection. In all probability, there could be found for him a place in some of our scientific institutions where he would fit in ideally. I had hoped to see you on your return from abroad, and trust you will not pass us by next time you are this way. Cordially yours, CBLee:DK President
