MEMORANDUM
To:
Jenny Luray
FROM:
Andrea Camp, Joanne Howes, and Elyse Rosenblum
Over the past year, Lifetime Television has mobilized parents to tell their child care
stories in their Caring for Kids Campaign. Lifetime has invested over $2 million dollars
to build a parent-friendly campaign that reaches out to women and their families in order
to amplify their voices and actions supporting a stronger national child care policy. The
Campaign emphasizes bringing new voices, especially those of parents, into this
important national debate.
Central to this effort is a compelling documentary directed and narrated by Academy
Award winning director Lee Grant and hosted by KyΓa Sedgewick. In the documentary
parents use their own voices to tell their child care stories, illustrating the problems and
solutions to child care in America. Confronting the Crisis: Child Care in America will
premiere on Tuesday, April 20.
We would like to propose an event at the White House on Monday, April 19 to highlight:
National Child Care Month and The Week Of the Young Child.
Excerpts from the Documentary, as they highlight the silent child care crisis that
occurs every day in millions of American homes, and the creative solutions
communities are putting forth to answer the crisis. Carol Black, the new President of
Lifetime Television would be on hand, as well as Lee Grant, the director of the
Documentary. Introduce some of the parents who have sent in their child care stories to Lifetime.
We would bring in some of the Virginia, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania stories.
We could also bring in some of the people featured in the Documentary, for
example from Bethlehem, PA.

Honor the new voices-in particular members of Fight Crime Invest In Kids-who have
joined Children's Advocates in the fight for child care. We would bring in the police
chief featured in the documentary to talk about the importance of child care to law
enforcement efforts.
