DRAFT Patagonia CEO: Yvon Chouinard Location: Ventura, CA BACKGROUND DATA: Patagonia is a manufacturer and distributes outdoor wear, started as a manufacturer of climbing equipment in 1974. The privately-held company had 1995 sales of roughly $150 million and 550 employees. The company devotes the greater of 10% of pre-tax profits or 1% of sales to environmental causes. CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP PRINCIPLE: Family-Friendly Workplaces Patagonia offers excellent maternity and paternity leave: four months, including eight weeks at full pay. Extended also to adoptive parents, this is one of the most generous packages in the country. Back at work, new parents have access to two on-site child care centers and are permitted five sick-child days per year. In addition, the company accomodates workers' lives outside the job via job sharing, work-at-home opportunities, flextime, and compressed workweeks. To top it off, the company has an excellent record of promoting women, with females holding more than half of the highest-paying jobs, including that of the President. The company has been recognized in the "Top 100" by both Working Mother magazine and Levering, and is, according to DOL's Wage and Hour Administration, a garment industry "Trend Setter." In addition, Patagonia offers an example of how "contagious" good corporate citizenship can be. After the tragic fire at Malden Mills in Lawrence, MA -- a major supplier of synthetic fleece -- Patagonia quickly announced that the disruption in supply would not produce any Patagonia layoffs. Noting the 15-year relationship between the two companies, Patagonia announced its commitment to getting Malden Mills back on its feet. CEO PROFILE: Yvon Chouinard is the founder of Patagonia in Ventura, California. An avid outdoorsman and rock climber, Mr. Chouinard began his business in 1962, with a one-page mail order rock climbing equipment catalogue. Today it is a highly successful manufacturer of outdoor sports equipment and clothing. Mr. Chouinard is active in environmental pursuits-- 1% of the company's sales go to environmental projects and initiatives.
