At 0654 April 26, USS HUSE and USS FROST attacked submarine
contact in 17-52 N., 38-04 W., (700 mi. W. of CAPE VERDE ISLAND).
3 explosions after hedgehog attacks. Contact then lost. Heavy
oil slick observed. Submarine possibly sunk.
ADMIRALTY, April 25, 1752.
SS sunk by Norwegian submarine ULA at 0519 2, April 19,
in 59-08 N., 05-23 E., (off NORWEGIAN coast). One torpedo seen
to hit, and second explosion heard 1 1/2 seconds later.
Note: Attack previously reported (summary 6/26).

MISCELLANEOUS
CLEVELAND (AP), Apr. 27.
S.S. FRANK E. VIGOR (U.S. Cgo. 3,886 tons) was sunk in
PELEE PASSAGE of WESTERN LAKE ERIE about 1030 z, April 27 after
a collision in the fog with S.S. PHILIP MINCH (U.S. Cgo. 5,865 tons).
All members of VIGOR'S crew were transferred to MINCH. There were
no injured.
CLEVELAND (AP), April 27.
S.S. JAMES H. REED (U.S. Cgo. 5,265 tons) sank about 1030 4,
April 27 as a result of a collision in the fog 40 miles North of
ERIE, PA., with S.S. ASHCROFT (Br. Cgo. 7,726 tons). 26 crew
members picked up. 10 missing. REED was enroute from BUFFALO to
TOLEDO. ASHEROFT was reported to be heavily damaged, and was
taken in tow by rescue boats.

Apr. 26 - Submarine contact 700 mi. T. of CAPE VERDE IS, by USS HUSE (DE)
and USS FROST (DE). 3 explosions and heavy oil slick followed
hadgehog attack. Contact then lost. Submarine probably sunk.
MISCELLANEOUS
Apr. 27 - At dawn in a heavy fog S.S. FRANK E. VIOOR (U.S. Cgo. 4,000 tons)
sank in WESTERN LAKE ERIE in collision with S.S. PHILIP MINCH
(U.S. Cgo. 6,000 tons). All members of VIGOR'S crew rescued.
There were no injured.
Apr. 27 - About the same time S.S. JAMES H. REED (U.S. Cgo. 5,000 tons)
sank 40 mi. N. of ERIE, PA., in collision with S.S. ASHCROFT
(Br. Cgo. 7,700 tons). 26 crew members picked up. 10 missing.
ASHCROFT heavily damaged, taken in tow.

ships later observed gutted. At 1150Z, S.S. JALAPADMA (Br. trans. 3935 tons)
carrying munitions exploded. Estimated 2,000 people killed, several
thousand injured. Following ships gutted: S.S. NORSE TRADER (Pan. Cgo.
3507 tons), IRAN (Pan. Cgo. 5704 tons). Port will take months torepair.
