12:30 Meeting with the President
Subject: British Naval Convoy at Shanghal
I reported to the President that to the best of our information and that
of the British Embassy in Washington the British were not convoying
or escorting vessels into and out of Shanghai. I understood that they
had a naval veasel off the mouth of the Yangtze, instructions of which
were to aid British vessels if attacked, and that so far I knew of no case
where one had been attacked. As soon as the Embassy received the
message from London getting specific information on this matter, the
President would be informed of it.
