MR. BUNDY:
I asked, when the reel was off, whether there was any direct
coordination between you and General Eisenhower in this effort that
he was making in early 1952 to get the EDC going and, in general,
when he was in command, what was the relationship between
the Department of State and General Eisenhower.
MR. ACHESON:
The link between the General and the State Department was through
Douglas MacArthur II, whom we had originally assigned to travel with
General Eisenhower, I think on his first preliminary trip to Europe
and this had turned out to be a great success. General Eisenhower
liked MacArthur very much. He is and was a strictly able, tactful (i)

fellow; he had our complete confidence in Washington so that communication

I think the important thing to point out about these discussions in
Bonn and Paris is that as Schuman on his side and Adenauer on his
