RECORDING* Every once in a while I am sorry that the truant officer who operated in our town was so efficient: I wish that he had been bow- legged, fat and lazy' Instead, he was a brisk guardian of the statutes, and repeatedly hauled me into the grade school, to see that education was "foisted" on me. I got the usual stern warnings -- and I mean "stern" -- but as result of this officer's efficiency, I did learn to read and write! Good thing I did, too! Because while it may not be a necessary require- ment in the post-war "political" fox holes of this Potomac River town -- it does holp! In this instance, at least, it helped me meet and talk to a man WHO -- and I really mean "Mister" WHO -- in the educational field of this good old U.S.A., is the "Alpha and Omega" of it all: Brother, the truant officer in his town, didn't have much to do. As a matter of fact he couldn't have. Because, this man really has a record of attendance in the Knowledge-Foundries of this Nation of ours that rates an "Oscar" in any book. His name is Earl Jämes McGrath, and he is the United States Commissioner of Education& And his "Academic" background 'and "Experience" for the job -- is outstanding *By Earl Jemes McGrath, U. S. Commissioner of Education, Federal Security Agency, Washington, D. C., with George E. Reedy of the Arrowhead Network for "Know Your Government' series, March 28, 1950.
