It can be said of no man that he founded the American
public schools; they grew out of the hearts of the people.
But it can be said of Horace Mann, as nearly as of any man,
that he is "father of the American public schools".
Listen to the words of Horace Mann: "On schools and
teachers I rely more than on any other earthly instrumentality
for the prosperity and honor of the State, and for the
reformation and advancement of the race."
Were he alive today, Horace Mann would rejoice to see
what the public schools have done to justify that faith.
A like faith is needed today to help the schools serve
as they can the people and the Nation.
Statement by Earl James McGrath, U. S. Commissioner of Education,
Office of Education, Federal Security Agency, Washington, D. C.
,
to be delivered on Hallmark greeting card program (TV) on Sunday,
March 8, 1953.
