GENERAL IMPRESSION OF THE DAY. Quiot with slight increase in artillery fire throughout sectór. Enemy lanes active, I. ENEMY FRONT LINE. The fact that the enemy front line is lightly held by a f ow scattered nochine guns was verified by our patrols which penetrated the front line in each sector and in some cases to a depth of about three kilometers without discovering ovidence of strong occupation by the enemy. Slight increase in activity over previous day. s/s VAUX. 21 Cal. 150 and 15 Cal. 105 on BEZONVAUX. 14 Cal. 105 on Fort VAUX, 12 Cal. 210 on Fort DOUAUMONT and 19 Cal. 210 on VERDUN. Some activity in back areas. Total for s/s: 23 Cal. 77, 43 Cal. 105, 21 Cal. 150 and 31 Cal. 210. s/s TAVANNES. 30 Cal. 105 in vicinity of P.C. CHEVERT. 25 Cal. 105 on GIX and vicinity, 50.Cal. 105 in vicinity of MOULAINVILLE. S ome activity on areas in the rear. From 24:00h to 2:00h the HERMEVILLE gr oup put down a normal barrage in front of C.R. EIX about 10% gas shells, s/s DERAMEE. 490 shells of various caliber, gas and high explosive were Iro aped in the vicinity of P.C. ROME. Some activity in the rear areas. s/s BOUEE. Reports 2500 shells of various caliber, gas and high explosive on sector during night. Objective, forward area of C.R. HAODIOMONT and artillery Total for sector: 2990 shells of various calibers. I. ENEMY MOVEMENTS. Visibility poor to fair. At 14:35h train seen moving from WARCQ toward :TAIN. 10:00h to 11:00h, 75 Germans seen moving between points U-21.31 and 22;34. II. ENEMY WORK. Small party working on dugaut at point U-39.64 III. ENEMY AERONAUTICS. Fourteen sing. le planes and one patrol of six planes and one patrol of four lanes over our lines during period. X. MISCELLANEOUS. Usual flares and smokes. as ACTIVITY OF OUR OWN TROOPS. Patrols: s/s BOUEE. Two patrols, one of which entered the enemy lines a- ross from MANHEULLES and reconnoitered enemy trenches in that vicinity. Heard Tome sounds of enemy but did not come in contact or draw 'usual machine gun fire. s/s DERAMEE. Two Patrols. One reconnoitered vicinity of BLANZEE and 500 ards north. Patrol did not enter BLANZEE, but no evidence of enemy were encoun- ored. The patrol from C.R. NATRONVILLE went through the Bois de CHABOTTE, Bois GRIMACOURT, as far as the north edge of Le Petit BOURBEAU without being Jlenged or fired upon. However, there were considerable sounds of enemy acti- ty in HERMEVILLE, s/s TAVANNES. One patrol from C.R. EIX reached point T-99.88 in vicinity ABACOURT, from this point enemy was heard moving about in wire, apparently strong col or combat group, occupying ABACOURT s/s VAUX. One patrol penetrated the vivinity of DIEPPE and reaching a point 500 yards north of the town. No indications of the enemy were discovered. By direction of the Chief of Staff. DECLASSIFIED J. H.
