MEMORANDUM: To all Medical Officers.
Following information relative to Chlorination of water
is quoted from Bulletin #1, January 6th, 1919 from Hdq. 3nd Army AEF.
HEADQUARTERS SECOND ARMY
Amerioan Expeditionary Forces.
Water:
All Water used by American troops shall be considered of doubtful
quality and when required for human consunption shall be ohlorinated,
unless it is being ohlorinated at the souros by apparatus installed and
supervised by the Engineer Department The following instructions for
the use of the Lyster Water Sterilizing Bag are quoted from Cirgular
No. 37, G. H. Q. A. E. F. S. 0., 1918, for the benerit of all conoerned
and will be followed striotly:
(1) Clean the inside of the bag thoroughly: use olean
Water and a clean brush and rinse thoroughly.
(3)
Fill it to the white band with best water available.
(3) Place a tube of hypochlorite in an ordnance oup and
break the tube with the butt of an ordnance knife. Mix the powder
into
a smooth paste with a little cold Water, using the blade of the knife
to
break up the lumps. Hypochlorite tenda to lump when added to Water,
and, therefore, special oars must be taken to obtain a smooth paste.
Fill the ordnance oup about half full of cold water, stir and pour the
nearly clear solution into the water in the bag, keeping the glass in
the cup. Stir the treated Water thoroughly with a spoon.
(4) Fasten the cover on the bag and allow the water to
stand 30 minutes, before using.
(5) Never refill a partially emptied bag. Always empty
the water from the bag befote refilling with fresh Water.
(6) Use one tube of powder for every XEXX bag full of
water.
Tubes of Hypooblorite are to be obtained Irom the Quartermaster.
(7) Report any difficulties to the Medical Officer.
