He is anxious for info soonest re US Govt reactions to developments particularly in light of fact he has at our suggestion (DEPTEL No. 454, May 28) sent UNCURK message of support and encouragement, He is disturbed by state- ment in UNCURK message that "members are very discouraged by military attitude." Lie also referred to question raised by Malania yesterday (OURTEL No. 873, June 2) concerning desirability of his issuing more formally and official statement for publication. I gave Lie for his personal and confidential information a general briefing on developments as reflected in cable exchanges of last. few days, pointing out necessity for extreme care to avoid any leaks here.. I refrained from mentioning possible future action, telling him merely that US Govt was giving careful con- sideration to problem and any comments on my part concerning future action would be purely speculative and possibly misleading. He expressed strongest desire to "be kept closely informed and was most anxious to do whatever he can "to prevent UNCURK from blow- ing up. #? Secretariat has just reed new cable from Mathieu, text of which we expect to have later today. Text read to us over phone indi- cates that in talk with reporter subsequent to press COFF mentioned MYTEL 881, Gen Clark expressed whole-hearted support OF UNCURK and, according to Mathieu's info, Clark also expreased this view to Rhee.
