Dear Dr. Magnuson:
I have been advised of your meeting with the President on
November twentieth and your subsequent conversation with Mr. David
Stowe concerning the establishment of the President's Commission on
the Health Needs of the Nation.
#
We are all pleased to learn of your willingness to serve
as Chairman of the Commission. In order that the President may have
your advice in the selection of the other members of the Commission,
I have prepared the attached list of suggested candidates. You will
probably want to add others to it.
We have been thinking in terms of a twelve to fifteen man
commission with an equal number, insofar as possible, of professional
and lay personnel. Within the medical group we have thought it
desirable to include one representative of the nursing and dental
professions respectively. I believe this information will be help-
ful to you in evaluating the attached list of suggested members and
your thoughts on the point will be welcome.
I understand that you will be in Washington next week and
at that time further steps will be taken in the establishment of the
Commission. I hope that this information will be of help to you in
getting the Commission under way.
Very sincerely yours,
DONALD S. DAWSON
Administrative Assistant
to the President
Paul B. Magnuson, M. D.,
700 North Michigan Avenue,
Chicago 11,
Illinois.
Enclosure.
