THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
August 12, 1971
THE
MEMORANDUM FOR:
THE PRESIDENT
FROM:
FREDERIC V. MALEK
SUBJECT:
Meeting with White House Summer
Interns
August 13, 1971
11:45 A. M. (10-15 minutes)
I.
PUR POSE
To introduce the 1971 White House Summer Interns to you in
order to cap their summer experience and send them back to
their campuses with the highest enthusiasm and respect for
the process of government and for this Administration.
II.
BACKGROUND, PARTICIPANTS, PRESS PLAN AND STAFF
A.
Background: This summer, as in the previous two summers,
we have brought on board a few carefully selected college
and graduate students to work in various staff offices. The
purpose of this is to expose these young people to the men
who manage the nation's affairs and to see the workings of
the White House. To this end the interns have had conver-
sations with most of the key White House staffers. They
have handled themselves very well, both in their jobs and
in their meetings.
B.
Participants: 20 students - 13 men, 7 young ladies, from
20 schools and 10 states. (See Attachment A) Staff present
will be Fred Malek and Jerry Jones.
C.
Press Plan: Ollie will take photos of each intern meeting
you; then there will be a photo opportunity as soon as the
group is congregated along the east side of the Oval Office.
