(Tuesday nets, wires, mags)
Arab terrorist attack on the Israeli compound at Olympics in
Munich led and dominated all nets. 2 Israeli athletes were
killed as the Arabs took over the compound. Then, it was a
waiting game all day as the Arabs threatened to kill 9 Israeli
hostages unless 200 Arab guerrillas were released by Israel.
Later, the terrorists along with the hostages flew in choppers
to a NATO airfield where a shootout ensued. Reports were
confused, but latest word on ABC special coverage was that all
9 Israelis were killed. Several Arabs were killed, others
wounded, and some possibly at large.
Reaction was strong from around the world. State, Waldheim,
the Vatican paper, and Hussein were among those condemning
the attack. Meir denounced the "insane terror. 11 And SU
expressed condolences and commiseration. There were
predictions of Israeli retaliation to come. ABC's Cioffi
predicted ''there's going to be hell to pay. 11
RN, on NBC/ABC film, expressed sympathy for the slain
athletes, and offered total cooperation of US in apprehending
the terrorists. He called it internat'l outlawry of the worst
sort, and pledged extra security for groups of Israelis traveling
in US.
McG, on NBC film, called it a senseless act of terrorism. He
urged that the Games be suspended until the incident was ended.
McG said it was especially tragic it happened at the Olympics,
a symbol of cooperation and peace.
NBC/CBS noted Senate and House (223-97) approved compromise
$4. 8B extension of antipoverty program.
Senate passed unanimously 3 bills to toughen and expand anti-
crime laws and also passed a bill to broaden drug rehab efforts,
