Mags/Columns separate) Major stories of the day: -- Worst earthquake in Mexican history led all nets w/reports of up to 500 dead w/over 1, 000 injured. No film available. Epicenter w/7. on Richter was 150 miles from Mex. City but even there, electricity was cut off. Thousands more homeless added to those already hit by flooding. -- Stockholm gunmen captured and hostages in "relatively good shape" after 6 1/2 days in bank vault which had become a "torture chamber. " #2 on ABC/CBS w/film on all shows. Police flushed gunmen out w/tear gas. Heath's arrival in Belfast under extremely tight security on ABC/NBC film. Smith said trip was expected to signal step-up in terrorism. Film on all nets from London as police warned all to be careful w/mail and, as Chancellor said, massive warning system "paid off, " Nets noted alert at British embassies thruout world w/only bomb found in Paris and it was defused. "Jittery but not panicky" is how CBS described London residents on "Handle w/Care" Day. ABC sees British commitment to seeing things thru re: N. Ire. may have actually been renewed. Bomb scare not over, all nets noted. -- In other foreign news noted by all nets, Pak/India reached accord on return of 90, 000 Pak and POWs and 160,000 Bengalis to B-D. ... And Solzhenitsyn spoke out again -- this time saying he's received threatening letters and if he or family is harmed, KGB will've had role -- moreover, he said, all his unpublished works are now outside USSR and they'll be published if he dies. -- Recently RN's big money backers have been making news, but Rabbi Korff's Comm for Fairness to Pres, is backed by 10, 000 contributors who average $10 in donations, ABC noted. CBS/ABC film told how his "let's be fair campaign" uses contributions for ads which note "hanging" lawyers on Ervin Comm and biased media are behaving like McCarthy.
