The Major Stories of the Day:
-- Military leaders seem to have things under control in Chile altho
there's some sniping and minor resistence. Reports of several
thousand dead from Tues. violence. Led all nets. US reaction
seen "cautious" and w/emphasis on "hands off¹¹ stance. Kalb said
the "expected" denials of involvement or complicity were forth-
coming, yet behind the scenes a group has been studying the Chilean
situation and US Amb. Davis, home for the wkend, returned to
Santiago Monday. Reuters report noted by ABC/CBS that Admin
reportedly knew coup was coming 2 full days in advance

Jarriel said US denied reports of being tipped off. Admin had been
advised coup was expected and that conditions were ripe for revolt
at any time but Admin denies it had info on precise time. Jarriel
noted WH-State "categorical" hands-off statements were considered
necessary because of "US record of interference in Chilean politics
and the undisguised lack of sympathy for Allende. 11

his said there was proof of foreign involvement including 1 American,
formerly w/CIA, and reps of Bolivia, Ecuador and Brazil, all

group was cut short by coup

Allende was killed trying to resist altho the generals say it was
suicide
HKS said tho US policy of benign neglect sounds
reprehensible, US doesn't know what to do and should do nothing
in terms of policy toward Latin America til continent takes some
action to help itself, e.g., European-style self-integration.
RN showed "considerable sympathy" for some form of tax measure
to deal w/inflation, said Burns on film on all nets -- #2 on CBS. By
saying this, NBC's Levine suggested Burns was indicating that RN
is preparing to renounce his campaign promise of no tax rise
