NEWS SUMMARY
Sept. 19, 1973
(Tues. nets, wires. Comment separate)
The major stories of the day:
"Topic A, 11 said Chancellor in lead story on all nets, was
story by "highly respected" Broder that senior GOP figure
feels VP's resignation is 99-1/2% certain. HKS began by
noting Post's "excellent batting record" on W gate revelations.
Nets featured WH "no comments" as signal that VP has, as
NBC put it, 'run out of friends at 1600 Penn. Ave. " Jarriel
saw WH stance as continuation of gradual step-up of WH signals
that could result in VP resignation and the ABC man made
comparison to WH position on Gray after Admin privately gave
up on his confirmation and left him "hanging in the wind"
Rather said WH stance was widely interpreted signal that per-
haps RN wouldn't mind seeing VP depart. WH was warned,
said Rather, of impression left by no comments, but still
"no comment. 11 Similarly, NBC's Brokaw said "no comment"
was response when Warren was asked about view of VP backers
who see "no comment" policy as "kiss of death" for VP.
Vic Gold on ABC/NBC clips charging WH was seeking VP's
removal -- "piranhas" was his description on NBC of Laird,
Haig, AG and he said RN is responsible for letting it happen.
ABC clip as Gold saw "osmotic conspiracy" and effort to divert
attention from W'gate.
VP shown on all nets at Bhutto
reception and subsequently saying he'd not comment on undisclosed
source stories. NBC noted source close to VP is increasingly
confident he'll not resign; that Post story was "overreading" of
something VP may' toyed with -- perhaps while in "a dark
mood, 11 added VP press secy, Thomson later. And NBC noted
Goldwater says subject hasn't come up at their recent and numerous
meetings, but he'd advise Veep to fight it out. Later, w/reports
citing BG as Broder source, the Sen. denied that and said he thinks
VP will stay on
ABC/NBC noted VP friends feel any resignation
would be out of character for a man who's a fighter and, added
NBC, it could be seen as admission of guilt and would undermine
legal case that impeachment must precede indictment. But,
