The major stories of the day:
Albert swiftly answers VP's request for Hill probe in brief,
but emphatic 2-sentence response: No action at this time as
case is before the courts. Led all nets w/7-9 minute reports.
Clips of O'Hara (D-Mich) on all shows as he reflected apparent
Dem sentiment: No man is above law; VP is desperately trying
to avoid prosecution and using House prematurely, thus
seeking to avoid normal processes of justice. Waldie and
Udall w/similar remarks on NBC film.
Ford on all nets --
ABC/NBC as he said if Dem majority doesn't want him to have
a fair hearing, there's nothing GOP can do about it. On CBS,
Ford said Hill was best way for VP to get hearing on charges
which have been unfairly leaked to press and prejudiced case
against him. Findley (R-I11), who intro'd resolution to start
probe, said on ABC it's no answer for House to duck
responsibility. VP on film on all nets following lunch w/Hatfield
and lib GOP solons -- not where you'd have expected to find
him, said ABC - - as he said: 1) Speaker had not laid request
on table for time immemorial; 2) He hasn't discussed resigning
w/RN and has no intention to resign; 3) He and lawyers didn't
initiate any out-of-court negotiations; 4) He may say more soon,
possibly in news conf
Later Wed, GOP MCs indicated they'
push for probe.
More signs of distance between WH and VP, said ABC w/Jarriel
saying VP went to Hill w/out any demonstration of support from
RN as Pres tries to steer as wide a path around latest embarrass-
ment as possible. Rather said RN sympathizes w/VP and wishes
him well, but he's said to be increasingly concerned w/ 1) the
country; 2) institution of Presidency; 3) Welfare of VP. No
elaboration, said Dan. And NBC's Brokaw said WH was following
a "carefully-defined campaign of non-involvement. 11
HKS
supported Albert's move -- courts will settle affair sooner than
Hill and Sevareid said VP request was doomed to begin with and
he, too, urged judiciary to point the way in both tapes and VP
affair as an Admin elected w/strong law and order appeal is now
floundering in an unprecedented morass of lawyers and disorder.
Connally on CBS film calling talk of Hill approving only a
caretaker "appalling" and "completely untenable. 11
