NEWS SUMMARY
November 9, 1973
(Nets, wires. Digest separate.)
The major stories of the day:
-
Israel and Egypt agreed to 5-pt. c-f agreement that could produce
peace talks on settlement by the end of the year. Led NBC/ABC
(#5 CBS) w/Chancellor calling it "all in all an extremely hopeful
piece of news. 11 What Egyptian spokesman called the "HAK plan"
provides for POW exchange, Egyptian access by "corridor" to 3rd
Army, end to Arab Red Sea blockade, no w/drawals from present
positions. And these steps are to lead to direct negotiations. US
officials w/HAK said they hoped agreement would be implemented w/in
4-5 days. Nets over silent films of HAK at Pyramids and w/Hussein
noted what Kalb called his "buoyantly optimistic" mood. Also film of
Sisco briefing Meir on all nets w/him expressing optimism.

Cronkite led CBS (short note on ABC/NBC) by saying 11 a year ago big
labor contributed materially to RN's return to office. Now it's seeking
to remove him. 11 AFL-CIQ in newsletter sent to leaders but not
membership asked 13 1/2/members to put pressure on MCs to impeach
him. RN's charged w/19 offenses from such specifics as establishing
his own "special secret police" and having CRP extort illegal contri-
butions to consistently lying and using his office for personal enrich-
ment. CBS did note WH said action's "ill-conceived and can only
result in harming US at home" and expressed confidence AFL-CIO
membership will reject "unseemly attempt to manufacture impeachment
fever" (ABC note).

bad in places she couldn't call her work a transcript, HRH saying
quality of the sound was fair and good enoughto get the general
meaning -- "it has its ups and downs. 11 But, NBC's Stern reported
RMW's testimony revealed to prosecutors a "significant discrepancy"
that "strongly suggests" someone'"interrupted' the taping mechanisms
in the hours before or after the RN-Dean conversation of 4/15. RMW
apparently worked on a tape from April 16th that was timed to function
automatically only on April 17th. To prosecutor Ben-Veniste that
meant it was obvious tapes were being switched from 1 machine to
another. Yet, noted Stern, WH logs reflect no such activity, hinting
that perhaps RN used the recording system to make tapes that have
