THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY April 10, 1974 (Tues. nets, wires. USIA Review on Paris Separate) The major stories of the day: "Not yes or no, but maybe and partly, later on" was how Morton of CBS described WH response to Judiciary. ABC's Donaldson said WH wasn't saying yes or no. Lead story on all nets as WH said it'd have info Judiciary needs when the Easter recess is over on April 22. But WH wants the added time to review request in light of Judiciary's 4/4 letter. ABC said WH may ask Comm. for even further specificity then. AP said JSC letter "fell far short of promising all sought. 11 CBS said apparently Judiciary will get some of what it wants. As for MCs reaction, ABC cited negatives from Waldie and Rangel while CBS said Comm. actaction now will depend on whether WH letter is seen as nose- thumbing or conciliation. Rodino on ABC/NBC before letter arrived was hopeful of affirmative response and said there'd be Thurs. meeting of Comm. to consider subpoena if WH didn't comply. ABC anticipates "many" pro-subpoena votes ABC/NBC noted Judiciary Dems supported beginning hearing evidence in closed session. May 7 and inviting St. Clair to attend, not to cross-exam. or call witnesses. ABC said 5-7 days of presentment is expected. NBC saw 6 weeks of Comm. work w/ possible July House vote and Oct vote on trial if House impeaches. UPI leads: "RN toured Xenia where tornado killed 35, calling the destruction the worse he's seen, but predicting the area 'will come back. 111 Excellent film of RN assuring the folks in #2 or 3 story on all nets w/emphasis on his pledge to step up aid. CBS said citizens appreciated hearing RN tell them they'd make it it brought them hope. Similarly, NB C said RN pledge to give all the help they need was reassuring and welcome. And ABC's Drury said if trip was helpful to RN in his troubles, it was also useful to a city in battle w/despair. Chopper tour and visit to disaster center covered on all nets / RN shaking hands as he encouraged the people crowded around. Most felt visit will help, said ABC. Especially morally, said one man; we know he cared enough to come see us. CBS/NBC film
