ADMIN
In #2 Star story, UPI's Thomas reports RN's expected to
combine summit w/swing thru M-E in late June. RN has let it be
known privately he'll go to M-E whether HAK's successful or not.
Moscow's tentatively scheduled for 6/24, but could get underway
sooner
RN expected to visit Saudi in June in stop that'l "point
up Faisal role in M-E talks, LA Times reports. Coughlin says visit
will proceed Moscow. US sources say "RN can anticipate a warm
welcome [as]
Faisal and other top officials remain convinced
W'gate is a 'Zionist-Communist" plot to bring down Admin because
of its close relations w/Arab world. TT
Star leads edit: "All right, we believe it. RN, come hell,
high water, or impchment, is going to Moscow. 11 From RN's view,
"it probably makes good sense, " and Judiciary "probably will and
certainly should suspend temporarily" its probe. Summit also
"makes eminently good sense from Brezhnev's point of view'', since
Russ "have made it clear they like RN's (and HAK's) brand of
diplomacy" and "they' re inclined to equate opposition to RN w/sinister
forces¹¹ in US. While RN had "hoped to have some impt piece of
business wrapped up in time for ratification at summit, Star believes
"this seems increasingly unlikely" now, which means meeting "will
bellargely ceremonial, confined to expressions of good intentions and
mutual esteem. And that, under the circumstances, might be no bad
thing. "
Heavy, oft. p. 1 coverage of RN speech: #4 Post story is 'RN Ties
Peace to US Arms"
Also #4 in LA Times: World Peace Rests on US
Strength, RN Tells Nation"
#6 story is "RN Warns Against
Isolationism"
Leads Inquirer's 2nd front page: "RN Opposes
Isolationist Trend".
"RN Warns Isolation Means World's Destruction" tops p. 3 in Trib
'RN Warns of Isolationism" on p. 14 in NY News on p. 24 in Times:
RN Makes Memorial Day Pleanfor a Strong Military"
Wide note
that RN had strong praise for bipartisan House majority that defeated
amendments to DOD bill that RN said would have weakened US
credibility and that RN singled out Hebert and Stennis.
