Major stories of the day:
- - Judiciary's version of WH t'scripts led NBC/CBS (#2 on ABC),
w/ABC's Donaldson saying Judiciary's version put RN in "far
worse light. 11 Morton of CBS said Comm's scripts were "harder
on RN. 11 Cronkite said they found "contradictions" from WH
version, and provided some deletions as "filtered out" by Rodino-
Hutchinson. NBC reported Rodino said there was no attempt to
draw any conclusions or attach significance to differences, but
Goralski said Comm. made some "striking additions generally
unfavorable to RN. 11 (Stern in NBC lead received from network
w/totally garbled sound).
ABC/CBS focused on 3/21 RN-Dean talk in which RN said,
"Just be damned sure you remember 'I can't recall. I can't
give any honest, an answer to that that I can recall, 111 as opposed
to WH version in which RN said, 'But you can say 'I don't remember. 111
ABC's Donaldson said diff was a Presid'l "command" as opposed
to suggestion. ABC/CBS also found that Judiciary's script gave
"tone" to part of 3/22 conversation on money for Hunt, w/Judiciary
quoting RN as saying "Well for Christ's sake, get it, 11 whereas WH
deleted the expletive. All nets cited conversation "missing" from
WH script of 3/22 in which RN's said to have referred to Ike only
caring about his being clean, in Sherm Adams case, w/RN declaring
he doesn't see it that way: "We're going to protect our people if we
can. 11 Goralski on NBC said some Judiciary MCs - - admittedly
anti-RN say WH attempted to put RN in "best possible light"
and say "that in itself may be impch'able offense. 11
ABC led w/RN meeting w/economic advisors (on film), w/"Wall
Street DJ at new 4-year low, Reasoner said. Cronkite in #5 story
(#8, NBC) said meeting took place w/economy "in deep trouble, "
w/all nets saying Admin emphasized no new solutions were found.
Rather said Admin made clear it's not going to apply any direct
pressure on industry or labor
Levine on NBC said it means no
tax hikes, no wage-price controls, and Rush said there 11 be no
effort to talk anyone out of specific hike
Rush on NBC said in
present situation, attempte to "jawbone" against increases might
have opposite effect, leading business to fear return to controls
and thus grabbing what hikes they can before
Mansfield on
ABC/CBS said neither Admin or Hill has dealt w/problem. CBS'
