OCR Page 1 of 2THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
April 7, 1949
Dear Mrs. Roosevelt:
My thoughts go back to the April day three
years ago when I stood with you at Hyde Park beside the
white marble memorial just put up at the grave of the
leader whose passing bereft a mation on April 12, 1945.
Flowers will be placed on that grave in the
rose garden next Tuesday in token of the love and
gratitude of all sorts and conditions of men. I wish
I could be with you and with his old neighbors and
friends to join in tribute to this great American.
His place in the hearts of his countrymen is reflected
in the steady flow of pilgrims to his last resting
place. While half a million make this reverent pilgrim-
age every twelvemonth, we know that his memory lives in
the hearts of grateful people all over the world.
Ours is the task to hold aloft the torch which
his falling hands released.
Very sincerely yours,
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt,
Hyde Park, New York.
