Lord in the Sacrament of His Love, but it
was toward the close of the memorable
year, 1830, that she was blessed with the
three apparitions of Mary Immaculate to
which we owe the Miraculous Medal.
The apparitions concerning the Medal
were all very much alike; their nature,
therefore, may be learned from a sum-
mary of Blessed Catherine's account of
the heavenly visitation which she received
on November 27th:
"The Blessed Virgin was standing
on a globe, and her face was beautiful
beyond words. Her fingers were cov-

The President
Washington, D. C.
My dear Mr. President:
As this Thanksgiving Day, of the year of our Lord the 1940th,
and of the Declaration of Independence the 164th, nears, the
members of the Japanese American Citizens League of Salt Lake
once again extend to you and yours its best wishes for an en-
joyable holiday season.
We are thankful that we are citizens of the United States of
America, and that we live in a land where the horrors of war
are still only newspaper headlines. We are thankful that we
are entitled to those freedoms of liberty, speech, assembly,
press, and conviction which mark America apart from all other
nations. We are thankful that such minority groups as ours
may live in peace and friendship with every other nationality.
We are thankful that the Almighty saw fit to give us birth in
the one land which permits us to be "free men in a "free
country" which is dedicated to the sovereignty of mankind and
the dignity of humanity.
It is our prayer that in the years to come peace and prosper-
ity will crown the efforts of the United States in their cho-
sen role of world leadership; that those few who cannot differ-
entiate between Japan, the nation, and the American-born citi-
zens of Japanese ancestry will not make us pay the penalty for
the actions of an Empire over whom we exercise no control; that
we will be given the privilege and the opportunity to demon-
strate our loyalty and patriotism to the one land to which we
pledge our allegiance; that all men will soon realize that one
need not look like a good "American" to be one.
It is our hope that you will enjoy this Utah celery, which was
grown by the members of our organization and sent to you with
our cordial best wishes for a thankful Thanksgiving and in ap-
preciation of your inspired leadership.
Yours faithfully,

What This Country Needs
I
a good ash tray. A good basic design for an
ash tray, we mean, the various makers of
ash trays to be free to embroider that basic
design as they please.
The basic design of today's typical American
ash tray harks back, obviously, to the days
when he-men rarely permitted themselves to
smoke cigarettes. It has a wide, flat rim, punc-
tuated with three or four rounded slots, each of
them the proper size for dry-docking a cigar.
This ash tray will berth a cigar with almost no
danger of accident, as it was originally designed
to do.
But how about the billions of cigarettes per
year that Americans now consume?
Well, a cigarette parked in one of those wide,
rounded slots is fair game for a chance breeze
or a slight jar, and the chances are 50-50 that it
will fall off rather than into the ash tray. For-
gotten. as it all too often is, a cigarette will burn
quietly without making the slightest outcry un-
til the unburned part lying outside the tray's
edge becomes heavier than the end where the
ash is building up. At this instant the cigarette
tips over. and the result is anything from a
simple varnish scab or a ruined rug to a disas-
trous fire.
We aren't plugging any trick ash trays, or
promising publicity to any inventors. We're
merely stating that what this country needs is
a basic design for ash trays to accommodate
both cigarettes and cigars. and that the sooner
such trays get into circulation the safer most of
us will be.

Hon. Franklin Delano Roosevelt
President of the United States
Washington, D. C.
My dear Mr. President:
I want to congratulate you on the great victory of
last Tuesday. I think it is a godsend you were elected
for a third term.
I missed Cleveland's election in 1884 by two weeks.
I cast my first vote in 1885 in Fayette County, Pennsyl-
vania, and I never missed an election or a primary since
that time. I have voted for you three times, but I do
not expect to have a chance to vote for a president the
next time. I want it understood that I was not a Wilkie
democrat. I do not believe in a person changing politics
every time the moon changes, and I was more than pleased
with this election. We carried our State and County.
I never had the pleasure of meeting you face to face
but I met your good wife on several occasions here in
Morgantown.
Mr. President, in regard to the Old Age Pension, I
hope that you can see your way clear that we can get our
Old Age Pension increased. I get the small sum of $17.00
per month and that is not very much to live on. I know
you will do all you can to have the pension increased.
I am sending Jennings Randolph, your good friend and
my good friend, a cane which he will present to you with
my sincere good wishes. I do not believe there is another
cane like it in the nation. This is a natural growth
thorn which grows in Walla Walla, Washington. My father
has a cousin there and he sent this cane to me. My re-
collection is that it is about seventy-five years old.
Hon. Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Page 2
November 9, 1940
I hope you will accept this little cane as a token of my
deep admiration for you.
I wish you all the success in the next four years
and I hope the best citizens of our nation will get down
to business and quit knocking our President and go along
with him. I am proud of this nation and proud that we
live in a nation where we have peace, and I hope and
pray that we will have peace in the years to come.
I wish you health, strength and courage to keep this
nation strong and free of war. I often remember the
words of William Jennings Bryan that he was for peace
at any price.
With kindest regards to you and all connected
with the administration.
Respectfully yours,

Dear Mr. President:
RECEIVED
A book which I believe will prove a significant con-
tribution to the subject of blighted residential neighborhood
reclamation, entitled "Waverly -- A Study in Neighborhood
Conservation", is being mailed to you under separate cover
I
today.
It covers studies in the old-time village of Waverly,
now a residential section of the City of Baltimore, Maryland --
recently conducted by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in
cooperation with other agencies -- and is intended to provide
an effective preventive remedy for the social and economic
disintegration of urban neighborhoods in which single-family,
owner-occupied homes predominate.
Although a great deal has been written about the effect
of internal blight or external encroachment on essentially
sound communities of that type, little material relating to
their protection is available. I believe that "Waverly --
A Study in Neighborhood Conservation" will be a valuable
textbook on this subject and that the techniques developed
in it will be found applicable to many other communities now
seeking a preventive remedy for neighborhood disintegration
and eventual slum development.
I hope that you will find the book of interest, and I
will appreciate any comment on it which you may care to make.
Very truly yours,
D. H. McNeal
