Mrs. Bokosky, the beneficiary of H.R. 2537, is a 47-year-old
native and citizen of Poland, who currently resides in Chicago,
Illinois. She was admitted to the United States as a visitor
in April 1969 and received extensions of stay until May 1970.
In August 1971, deportation proceedings were instituted
against her on the ground that she had remained in the U.S.
longer than permitted.
In December 1971, she was married to a U.S. citizen, and he
filed a visa petition on her behalf which was approved in
February 1972. However, that petition was invalidated by her
husband's death two months later as the result of an auto
accident.
2
Mrs. Bokosky completed 14 years of schooling in her native
country, including two years of business college. She was
at last report employed as an assembler earning $130 per
week.
Absent this legislation, Mrs. Bokosky would be chargeable
to the nonpreference portion of the numerical limitation
for immigrants and conditional entrants from Eastern
Hemisphere countries.
