You will be attending a ceremony at the Pepperdine Urban University Campus in LA honoring Pearl Williams as the oldest Foster Grandparent in the US. Mrs. Williams will be 106 on Thurs. May 22. She was born in Jefferson County Alabama in 1869; was the 2nd of 5 children. She has a sister, 90, still living. Pearl married at age 12, had a daughter. Her husband died 2 years later. She later married John Williams, had another daughter. John Williams died in 1941. She and her husband, who were in constanttsearch for work, left Kansas City, Missouri for California in the early 1900's by covered Wagon for California where they settled. She lives with her daughter. Is supposed to have a great deal of energy and be in good health. She is one of the people Cicely Tyson spent time with when Cicely Tyson was studying for her part in the"Autobiography of Jane Pittman". Pearl Williams, I am told, helps supervise the activities of 45 pre-schoolers. I'm not certain Pearl Williams will be honored in conjunction with a celebration of the Foster Grandparent Program's 10th Anniversary. Also, May is National Senior Citizen's month. There are 102 Semior citizens involved in the Pepperdine Univ. Foster Grandparent Program. The participants in the program work in 5 different children's institutions in the L.A. area and workt 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. The program is sponsored by ACTION. You will be giving Pearl Williams roses and certificates of appreciation from the local and national group. THE NATIONAL ART ASSOCIATION DINNER AND NALL You will be receiving the Association's 1975 Distinguished Woman of the Year Award as well as a portrait of yourself being painted by a local artist, Frances O'Farrell. First, the group. It was founded in LA in 1969 to support and promote interest in the fine arts and aid scholars of the arts. Dear Sheila, Sorry I missed you when you were out here last. I tracked down your schedule in Palm Springs and L.A., but couldn't swing the time to get up there and say hello. I guess Eddie did see Dad. I trust you're both in good health. Anyways, when you and Betty Ford cruise out here around May 19, I'd be delighted to get together with you. If possible, an interview with a member of the Ford family would be great! I realize Betty probably has a tight schedule already. But if time permits, her interview with a small newspaper would be tremendous P.R., especially when the wires pick it up. Frankly, the interview wouldn't hurt my grueling ascent up the ladder, either. Whatever happens I've been reporting for the Star-News for about four months now, after leaving a news-writing stint at the ABC affiliate here. The Star-News covers the metropolitan South Bay area of San Diego, and has earned a reputation (with little help from me) as one of the better news media in the county...and for San Diego County, that's not saying much. I'd appreciate some sort of confirmation on when and if we can get FORD together. You can reach me at the Star-News, or at home at 720 W. Lewis St. #9, San Diego 92103 (phone 714--296-1070). PRINS BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA PRESIDENT *WORLD*HARMONE A Non-Profit Organization LOVE CONQUERS ALL Dear Honorable Public Servant: We know the criticalness of the hour, and are concerned as you must be concerned with the international scene. Since it is our desire to bring about world accord, we have devised a means whereby mankind can be united without being threaten- ed by powers which seek control. There is one unifying principle which has been taught by all religions, no matter what part of the globe from which they originated, revealing THAT THERE IS WITHIN MAN A POWER WHICH CAN UNITE ALL MANKIND. This Power has held the Universe together. We are enclosing with this communication A Manifesto which has been delivered into our hands by Powers not existing on earth. Those who recognize Divine Guidance will see that this could not have been the creation of human mind but comes from a higher source. Therefore its precepts will be established since it is not within anyone's abilities to prevent it from being put into effect. In time it will come about, for we are ruled by Greater Laws governing the Universe than man-made laws. Today it is either Love or perish. We send this message to you with all our Love behind it, knowing that if there is some measure of assistance you can offer in helping to estab- lish any of these precepts on earth, you will do SO. May you be blessed in your efforts to make this world a more befitting place in which to dwell. Cordially yours, E. C. Not many will see it as such but this is not important. The important thing is for those who realize this, no matter how few they be here on earth, to come together and put in their best to permit Love Conquer All in the interest of Man. Initial set-backs mean nothing. The vital point is that once these few realize that there is a Supreme Intelli- gence and Power other than Man's that backs their efforts there should be no sense to think of failure. The path may be long, weary and dreary but, surely, the spirit of Love shall prevail in the end. I should be most grateful if you would please let me have details about the activities of World Harmony. None here can defy the Creator's Will. It commands our respect.
