Statement by Earl J. McGrath, U. S. Commissioner of Education Federal Security Agency June 10, 1949 U.S. COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION COMMENTS ON "AMERICAN EDUCATION AND INTERNATIONAL TENSIONS" - REPORT OF THE EDUCATIONAL POLICIES COMMISSION In response to inquiries from the press, Earl J. McGrath, U. S. Commissioner of Education, Federal Security Agency, today issued the following statement: I strongly endorse the report of the Educational Policies Commission, "American Education and International Tensions, " including the four-point program under the heading, the Threat of Totalitarianism." Specifically, I agree with the statement of the report: "Members of the Communist Party of the United States should not be employed as teachers." Teachers who have sworn allegiance to an organisation committed to the destruction of American freedoms make a travesty of academic freedom when they claim immunity under its principles to advocate their subversive doctrine. In this connection, however, I should like to call attention to the threat to liberal thinking which could occur if super-sealots should choose to hurl unfair or unfounded charges against teachers whose views and opinions do not conform to the majority group.
